Palin, Polar Bears, and Politics
By Kate O’hara
John McCain made an astonishing pick for his vice presidential candidate in Sarah Palin, who when all is said and done, holds an opposite stance to what McCain has said in lots of his energy advertisements. These ads have stated McCain is looking to get the US out of dependency on oil and gas with emphasis on renewable energy but the problem is that Palin is pro-energy from Big Oil. She has governed Alaska as a supporter of gas and oil development which includes opening up reserved wildlife preserves that would destroy the polar bear habitat. Since becoming the Governor of Alaska, Palin has used her powers to promote opening up more land including the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge for more drilling of oil. She also was against the addition of polar bears on the threatened species list which shows her goal in supporting oil and gas development.
Palin is another Dick Cheney but with no experience and it wouldn’t be surprising to hear of her on a wolf hunting trip in Alaska and accidentally shooting someone. This reference is of course to the Palin's Wolf Bounty Program which pays bounty hunters $150 dollars for each wolf killed. Her protection of oil and gas development means that she will still argue over scientific data that has stated in the shrinking of sea ice which affect polar bears and their food supply. She was stated as writing “There is insufficient evidence that polar bears are in danger of becoming extinct within the foreseeable future — the trigger for protection under the ESA,” she wrote. “And there is no evidence that polar bears are being mismanaged through existing international agreements and the federal Marine Mammal Protection Act.” This shows that her most important goal is to allow companies in Alaska to drill for oil and gas while disregarding the natural impact it has and everyone has to love Kassie Siegel’s, of the Center for Biological, response to her by saying "She's either grossly misinformed or intentionally misleading, and both are unbecoming".
It was humorous to hear Palin say “Stood up to the special interest and the lobbyist and the big oil companies and the good old boys..” at the RNC. Palin is still a blind thinker who does not look at the effects of drilling and laying down pipelines. She talks about renewable energy but she is not really looking at the future of energy. Palin is all for more and more drilling without really thinking of the future outcome. Her solution is the same old thinking that the Republican Party is about which is placing bandages on the problem but not really looking for a cure. This means drill, drill, drill, and drill until you can’t drill anymore. The affect on the planet, wildlife, and the climate are all ignored without any regard. Why? Well money still makes the world go round and opening up land for drilling means billions of dollars; an example being the purchase of 29.4 million acres of land in the Chukchi Sea that is inhabited by polar bears.
In the end, a McCain and Palin government looks like one that will drill anywhere and everywhere without little regard on the effects on the land, sea, and air and without regard to the threats on the animals that live on this planet with mankind. Thus for the polar bears, the wolverines, the northern spotted owls, the manatees, and so many others, producing energy is always more important to this regime. In conclusion, Rudy Giuliani stated that McCain selected Sarah Palin for the future and the future looks bleak except for oil and gas companies.
